1. Orbiting Earth

“Everything is normal“, the doctor was saying, “just lie back and relax; you have a son.“
Earlier:
I get out of the GraviTax and walk down the busy halls of the Lune-a-Mall. It has been a while
since I've been here the last time. Looking up I see it levitating high above us.
Green-blue-white. So innocent from the distance, so ravaged by mankind if you take a closer look.
It has definitely seen better days.
The ferry took four hours and I spent a fortune to get a place on it. Too late to pussy out anyway.
Another look at the card in my hand. I can barely make it out – my hand is shaking nervously.
It doesn't matter. I don't really need to read it. I looked at it uncountable times lately.

Eugene and Kruger
Medical & Plastigenetic Services
Selene Avenue 146

There was a time when I would not even have considered it. I lively remember the big protest
marches to Capital City back in the days when the laws were discussed. Not that we could stop it or
even halt it for a significant amount of time. Times change, and ethics change with them.
But things happened. Life on the fringe of society was never easy, but these days it's downright
illegal.
He made things worse. He promised peace, but he did not mention the price.
One billion died alone in the first year of his dominion. Afterwards things settled. Resistance was
nearly battered – but that was just the tip of the iceberg.
After implementation of the new laws the genetic cleansing begun. The virus raged for a decade
until it died – it ran out of fuel.
I joined the resistance early. Living undercover, most of us even underground and making plans
how to end the madness.
We were fools to think we could change the world like that... But fate played in our hands.
On the ferry I permanently thought:
“What if? What if I had not met him at one of our childish missions? If he hadn't taken pleasure in
my body?”
I am not persuading myself to believe that it was anything else that made him fall for me. The
person I wanted to see dead for ages... and still I had to share the bed with him. I was disgusted –
even though I have to admit that he knows how to please... But marriage was just an excuse to
abuse me the way he wanted to.
Headquarters was right – I could not just kill him. It would make things worse. He decided to call
out a hereditary monarchy but there is no son yet. No offspring of any kind. Killing him would
break the world apart. We don't have much, but at least we have order.
But there is a way to stop him...
I arrive at Selene Avenue 146. I look in a mirror – probably the last time I will see this face. He
won't know what hit him in a few years. How could he suspect to be father? For him I will have
died 18 years ago. Killed by the resistance while pregnant with his soon to be first-born. His son
will be taught by us. Taught to lead mankind into a brighter future.
I enter the clinic, everything is prepared. Ten minutes later I drift into unconsciousness...

2. Personal textlog entry by Aura

Two weeks... too much time. I should not stay so long in one place. At least everything went
according to plan. I'm still freaked out when I look into the mirror. Not that my new face is ugly –
quite the opposite to be true, but it does not look like me any more (well I guess that's the point of
the whole idea). Little munchkin is alright as well. He was a little small at birth but he is as fit as a
fiddle. I haven't decided on a name, yet. It is quite hard to give him an appropriate name. How could
I know what name would be appropriate – how can I now how he turns out to be. At the moment
“smelly screamer” would fit.... :)
The last weeks were quite boring. At least in this hideout. Fortunately, I receive some HoloVid
Newschannels.
My “death” created quite a stir on good ol' earth. Yesterday was my funeral. Oh how I would have
liked to be there. Okay – not in the coffin, but as a spectator. To see who really cared....
Mr. Eugene said that we will be ready for transport in a week. The shuttle is already organized. It
will bring us to a freighter at Lunar IX. And from there: To the fringe.
I'm a little frightened. The fringe is no place to raise a child. But so is HIS palace. (Oh how I look
forward to finally deprive him of his power.)
The fringe of civilization. The fringe of the known (and colonized) universe. A hard life for settlers.
Most of them expelled from the other planets. Outlaws, Outsiders, different thinking people,
criminals, rebells. They colonize it and when its prepared the civilization moves in. With them
police, army, order. The former outlaws may become governors, well respected citizens or such...
The next generation of outlaws will be driven further into the unchartered realm. This way the
human empire expands generation by generation. Now I will be a part of it. At least for a while...

3. The last night

It is the last night before their flight to Lunar IX. Aura sits in the old fashioned rocking chair - the
baby (Munchkin as she lovingly calls him) sleeps peacefully. It is quiet around her. She looks at the
room she spent the most time of the last weeks in. Nothing special, archaic except for the small
terminal on a plastic table. It is Aura's only connection to the world outside of this hideout. Eugene
doesn't like her to browse web – paranoid relict. Nobody suspects her to be here and she doesn't
give anything away on the web. Just checking the latest news, watching shows – killing time.
Eugene and Kruger did not allow her to workout so soon after delivery– so whats left to do?
It's a large building Aura hides in, mostly offices, practices, laboratories. In the daytime she has to
stay in this small storeroom of “Eugene and Kruger” - but even after hours she is not allowed to
leave the practice to wander around. No one to talk to except for both doctors.
Aura looks at her baby, sighes: “Okay munchi, don't be offended, but I need to check the web a last
time”
She puts him aside and goes to the terminal -switching it on. WorldNewsNet is her first destination
– ERROR 404 WEBSITE NOT FOUND.
Frowning she types in another address – same result. Odd...
She looks at the little green bar on the right side of the terminal. The terminal is plugged in but the
bar shows that it runs on batteries.
A shiver runs down her spine and suddenly the comforting silence does not feel that comforting at
all anymore.
No web is odd enough so close to earth nowadays, but no web and no electricity set Aura's antennae
quivering.
Aura grabs the baby -careful to avoid waking him up – and puts him in the “babybackpack”.
After buckling him on her back she takes the sports bag -luckily she already packed for tomorrow -
and heads to the door.
'No, wait – better get the gun', she grabs under her pillow and takes the Sauer 9X. Its a small
weapon – not her favorite kind, too ladylike, semiautomati- , regardless of that it is capable of
punching impressive holes in human bodies.
It is dark in the practice, only some LEDs glow in the dark - powered by secondary batteries.
Looking out of a window she sees the skyline of Lunarcity. It glows. Rest of the town has juice.
She could be wrong – still no sign of anything or anybody dangerous, but there is no such thing as
coincidence.
Aura leaves the practice and heads down the long corridor. Everything is silent – not even the
constant humming of computers, terminals or an aircondition. The kind of silence you don't here
often today.
Light from the city falls in through some office doors – enough light to see where to go, but also
enough shadow to play tricks on ones mind.
Was there a movement? No, just imagination...
She arrives at the stairway. Just before she reaches for the door handle she hears a sound from the
other side. Shuffling and metals slightly hitting against each other. She has to act fast.
The door handle gets pushed down, the door opens, three shadowy figures enter the corridor,
securing it with their submachine guns. She sees them from the birds perspective, crouching in the
low space between the ceiling slaps and the concrete ceiling.
While holding her breath she sees them slowly advance under her.
'Who are those guys? Special Unit? Who sent them? What are they searching for? Me? Does not
matter – if they get my everything is in jeopardy...lets just hope that...'
Suddenly a cry breaks the silence - the baby woke up.
'No time to think, time to act', Aura thinks as she sees the three silhouettes turn towards her. A well
placed shot cracks the skull of number one. She jumps from the ceiling, making sure that her baby
won't be harmed and lands smoothly on her feet. A burst of fire hits the ceiling where she was
crawling a second before. She doesn't give the remaining two time to catch their breath and runs
towards them, disables number two with a bullet in the shoulder and the knee and buries her heel in
the face of number three.
She takes one of the SMGs and a combatknife, with which she makes sure that none of them
survives to identify her.
'Where they are will be more and they will be alerted by the shooting. Time to run!', she thinks.
'There is only one way: The roof, the carefully concealed spaceshuttle on it. Its not state of the art,
but it has been enhanced to slip under the radar...'
